Ep. 6 Fostering a Thankful Heart in the Land of Self

Thanksgiving is close and we couldn't be more excited! There may not feel like much to be thankful for in 2020, but there is always something to be thankful for when you're a child of God.

In this episode we tackled the very important issue of raising selfless kids in a selfish culture. This starts with having a thankful heart and it starts with us as moms. If we don’t have thankful hearts, it’s almost certain that our kids won’t either.

Our guest Cathy, who is the director of children's ministry at church and our dear friend, gave us some wonderful, Biblically-based application for fostering a heart of thankfulness in ourselves, as well as in our children.

It seems as though teaching or fostering an attitude of gratitude in our American culture is like swimming up stream in a storm. The culture praises self: self is king and self is god. It's easy to get caught up in that mindset! It's a daily choice to be thankful.

In this episode, we talked about how service and sacrifice are some of the ways to combat selfishness and complaining. As mothers, it may seem that everything we do is service oriented. If we're being honest, most of the time it's just easier to do everything ourselves! It is imperative that we teach and then give our kids opportunities to show responsibility and service towards other family members and friends as early as possible. This gives them an appreciation for others, for acts of service, and ultimately, a deep appreciation for the greatest act of service: Jesus' death on the cross for our sins!

When we get to see Jesus face to face we want to hear, "Well done My good and faithful servant." Notice Jesus doesn't say, 'Mom, ministry leader, wife, career woman, or boss lady.' Jesus values service above all. 

'For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.' Matthew 20:28 NLT
